BMW NP Body Armor

I finally got a hands on demonstration of the BMW version of D3O body armor, which BMW calls NP.   I happened to be near CAL Moto in Mountain View, a great shop run by enthusiasts Kari Prager and Mike Meissner. They carry a lot of the BMW product line, and I got a hands on demonstration of the BMW version of this high tech product. Before getting into the details, let me say a few words about the BMW version of this material.  BMW's version is substantially thicker, and looks a... Read more

Triumph Jacket Reported Similar to Gang Jacket

Motorcycle News UK is reporting that this Triumph jacket looks quite similar to the gang logo used by the Outlaws. A Motorcycle News reader suggests that wearing the jacket could be dangerous if the Outlaws took offense. In this time when many providers of motorcycle and motorcycle fashion wear are looking to existing designs for graphics, it would be a good idea to at least understand the issues involved. Now that Triumph is aware of the risk involved with this design, what would t... Read more

Shark Helmet Scores in Sharp Ratings

It's about time to look at a new lid.  As a long time Arai, and occasional Shoei, user, I have looked at some of the innovative safety features of Shark helmets from time to time.  Here is the Shark RS2 Duhamel Model: Readers of this blog know that I have also been a fan of the UK's Sharp program, where helmets are rated from one to five stars.  This is designed to allow riders to simply purchase five star helmets, with a good chance that they are buying the safest helmets available. ... How to Settle Your Motorcycle Accident Claim

Frequently, riders ask me about settling their own claims following a motorcycle accident.  After all, they reason, it wasn't my fault and I'm not looking for blood.  Won't the insurance company want to settle my case? Unfortunately,  insurance companies have focused only on quarterly results for so many years, that they have forgotten completely about their purpose.  They now act as though the premiums are theirs to invest, and anyone making a claim is a criminal, to be treated like one.... Cycleport Comes Through Again

Wayne Boyer has done it again. One of my favorite summer pieces of riding gear is my Motoport (CyclePort) Cordura jeans. Even my wife likes the way these look, and they actually, truly, are more comfortable than my regular denim jeans. I had these made a few years ago, when I sent my then-favorite jeans to be copied. A few weeks later, voila! Body armor where you would want it, same measurements as favorite jeans, softer and more comfortable, more breathable, and capable of saving my hide ... Read more

Carnegie Park Dirt Bike Day

This last weekend I rented a dirt bike from Thunder Road Motorsports, in their Livermore location. The owner, Michael, and his wife came down specially to set me up, and waited for me at the end of the day.  This is amazing, since they live about an hour from the location.  Although I didn't need it, Michael also loaned me a loading ramp at no charge. Carnegie Park is about a half hour away, and has everything you need for a day of fun. I used the concrete loading platform at the park... Read more

Fryed Brothers Band Movie to Debut at Maui Film Festival

Daron Ker at Water Buffalo Films will be showing I Ride, the incredible story of the Fryed Brothers Band, at the Maui Film Festival. Long the buzz of the motorcycle world, this long awaited film is certain to be a major, major hit in the riding world. Everyone knows the Fryed Brothers as a truly terrific band, and most know that they limit themselves to biker events. I know that they have been very good to yours truly, and that their tunes are awesome in an ipod for those riders who lis... Read more

Time To Plan

It is almost exactly six month from the 2008 Sturgis event, and almost exactly six month until the 2009 Sturgis event. I thought this would be a good time to remind everyone to make plans now, if you haven't already. Last year 400,000 riders attended, with advertisers, events, revenue for local governments, and all the fun, camaraderie, and tradition associated with this biggest of events.  Next year should be the same. There is little evidence that the economy will play a major role in d... Read more

Jack Gagen, Noted Motorcyclist

Jack Gagen, whose baseball decorated Harley took him to every major league park in the country, died in his sleep after watching the Superbowl. Those who knew Jack, even slightly, could not help but admire his spirit, his energy, and his tremendous love of life and people. He was the life of the party, and wherever he was, so was the party. An interesting and intelligent man, and everyone's favorite rider, his wife Marilyn was one of the first women in the country to become a partner at... Read more

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

In normal times, about 25% of the motorists in California operate without insurance. As the economy continues to sag, that number is going up. California allows motorists to operate with as little as $15,000 in liability coverage. As the economy sags, more drivers are buying the lower limit policies. If you are the victim of a left turning car that cuts you off, this means that a lot of the time, you are going to be out of luck economically as well as having serious injuries from an acc...
